Belper School clinch Y7 Football crown

Four schools attended our 2017/18 Y7 Football playoff evening in the hope of claiming the overall schools title
The top 4 schools from our league fixtures were paired off into semi-finals with 1st place coming up against 4th and 2nd against 3rd
In the first semi-final between Belper School and Heanor Gate a 2 minute attacking spell was the difference as Belper scored 2 goals in quick succession to take a lead midway through the first half. Heanor showed terrific character to come back strongly but couldnt find a way through and had to settle for a place in the 3rd place playoff game
In the second semi-final 4th placed Swanwick Hall took on league leaders John Flamsteed with both teams making a combative start to the game. However it was Swanwick who showed the extra quality in the first half and grabbed their goals to take a unassailable 2-0 lead and book a place in the final
Heanor Gate and John Flamsteed then clashed in the 3rd place playoff, both teams started tentatively before Heanor Gate burst into life to grab two goals towards the end of the first half. John Flamsteed knew they had to get the next goal to have a chance and began the second half well only to be caught on the break as Heanor took a 3-0 lead. John Flamsteed did reply quickly and showed signs of putting pressure on Heanor but couldnt make any further inroads
Belper School then took on Swanwick Hall in the overall final. Both teams showed excellent quality on the ball and tactical discipline in the first half with chances very much at a premium, however from a long ball and a defensive mix up the Swanwick striker managed to poke the ball goalwards before it was slid over the line by a Belper defender. Belper responded immediately though and equalised through an own goal own their own as a long range shot took a huge deflection to wrong foot the goalkeeper. The second half was equally evenly matched but as time wore on Belper began to put more and more pressure on the Swanwick goal and got their rewards 5 minutes from time to take a 2-1 lead before hanging on to claim the trophy!
Congratulations to each team for making it this far and well done to our Y7 Champions - Belper School
